FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your lavender organic?

While we don’t use any pesticides or herbicides on our farm, we are surrounded by corn and soybean fields, so we cannot be certified organic due to the possibility of drift.

When we were just starting out we heard a story about a woman and her granddaughter out picking flowers. The little girl noticed the bees all over the lavender weren't moving.. Alarmed,, she asked, "Grandma why are the bees dead?" Her grandma said, "Oh honey, those bees aren't dead, they are just sleeping. "

We thought it was a wonderful story, and that first year at harvest found it was absolutely true. We constantly have to swish and shoo the sleeping bees off the lavender!

Can we visit your farm?

We do events throughout the spring, summer and fall at the farm. We do not currently have a shop that is open full time. Please check out our calendar of events here: Calendar , or check our social media for dates/times that the farm is open.

Can you really eat lavender?

Yes! Lavender is a herb in the same family as rosemary. It has a lovely floral taste, and compliments many sweet and savory dishes. All of the lavender we grow at Sleepy Bees Lavender Farm is culinary. Try grinding the buds and adding a teaspoon to your chocolate chip cookies, banana bread, lemon bars, and favorite spice rubs. Lavender also makes a fabulous latte!

Is lavender hard to grow? What variety do you grow?

Lavender is a Mediterranean plant, and prefers dry, rocky soil and lots of sun. Here in SE Nebraska, we have clay soil that retains water, so we have amended our soil and added lime gravel to our rows. The biggest mistake when growing lavender is over watering, it is a very drought tolerant plant and hates to have "wet feet". The variety we grow is called Phenomenal, and it was developed for more humid areas with colder winters.
